Alert Days Saturday and Sunday amid heat, risk of severe storms in Maryland

Continued hot weather and a greater risk of thunderstorms have prompted an Alert Day Saturday across Maryland. Plan on a repeat of the same conditions Sunday, another Alert Day.

Scattered severe storms in Maryland

At 4 p.m., hit-or-miss thunderstorms are developing across southern Pennsylvania and central Maryland. Thunderstorms will continue to develop and move southward through mid-evening. A couple of storms could produce wind gusts to 65 MPH, in addition to hail. Any storm that develops will produce tons of lightning and brief heavy rain, even if not severe.

"When thunder roars, move indoors."

Heat wave continues in Baltimore

While not as hot as Friday, most communities reached temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s across greater Baltimore early Saturday afternoon. With humidity factored in, some areas felt hotter than 100°. If you're doing strenuous work outside, make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Find some shade if you can. Also, pay closer attention to how you are feeling.

Sunday features a minor spike in the heat. Temperatures peak in the low to mid-90s Sunday afternoon. It'll feel as hot as 105° in a few spots, mainly across the eastern shore and southern Maryland, Sunday afternoon and early evening.

Monday remains just as hot. Temperatures soar Tuesday, into Wednesday. Temperatures peak in the mid to upper 90s both afternoons. It feels like it's well over 100°. Alert Days may be needed if temperatures approach dangerous levels.

Cooler weather in Maryland's forecast

A big weather pattern change takes shape in the middle of the workweek. A front is expected to sweep through Maryland, with a greater chance of showers and storms Wednesday into Thursday. Following storms, much cooler weather arrives. Afternoon temperatures will stay in the low to mid-80s as we end the workweek. Mornings will feel much more comfortable, with temperatures in the low to mid-60s around sunrise.

In addition, lower humidity and a dry forecast will make for great weather. Pleasant conditions continue into next weekend.
