Chicago shooting in West Lawn kills man, injures teen; 3 in custody, police say
Three people are in custody after a Chicago shooting killed one man and injured a teenager in the West Lawn neighborhood Wednesday night.
Police said just after 11:30 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Avers Avenue, an 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were walking on the sidewalk with a group when three people in the group turned on them, pulled out guns, and fired shots.
The 18-year-old victim was shot in the head and taken to Christ Hospital, where he died. He has not been identified. The 15-year-old boy was shot in the cheek and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
Neighbors said they're shocked that it happened so close to their homes in what is normally considered a quiet area.
One of those neighbors, who didn't want to be identified, said she didn't hear the gunshots, but found the wounded 15-year-old in her back alley.
The neighbor said the boy made a second call to his mom, leaving a voicemail asking for her help and for her to come to get him. She said that should be a warning to all parents to know where their kids are and how to find them.
The two victims are brothers, neighbors said.
Police said three people were taken into custody in the 6800 block of South Pulaski Road shortly after the shooting.
Police say two guns were recovered.
As of Thursday afternoon, charges are still pending.
