Two teens were wounded in a shooting Wednesday afternoon on the Dan Ryan Expressway, and police blocked the inbound local lanes afterward as they investigated.

Police said, shortly after 2 p.m., troopers responded to the inbound Dan Ryan near 43rd Street for a report of shots fired.

Chicago Fire Department officials said two 18-year-olds were wounded in the shooting. One victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The other victim was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where their condition was stabilized.

Fire officials said the shooting happened after a chase that began in the local lanes of the Dan Ryan before switching to the express lanes.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said the three right express lanes on the inbound Dan Ryan were blocked at 43rd Street immediately after the shooting. The inbound local lanes were also also closed as troopers looked for evidence.

All lanes had reopened by 6 p.m.

Montrel Grady, who was on his way to work at the time, saw the victims being taken away.

"I saw the firetrucks and stuff and everything coming towards them," he said. "Then I saw them get put on the stretcher, too."

Fire Department officials said it was too early to tell if the shooting was a result of road rage. That's something Illinois State Police will have to determine.
