Man, 39, critically hurt after being shot multiple times overnight in River North
Chicago police on Sunday were investigating a shooting in River North that left a man critically injured overnight.
The shooting happened when streets were still busy with people out at bars and restaurants in the area.
Residents of the area said they are upset and concerned to see a second shooting happen at Ontario and Franklin streets within a week. The shooting at 12:30 a.m. Sunday happened in a parking lot in the 300 block of West Ontario Street, with a trail of blood extending all along the sidewalk down the block to the point where witnesses said the victim collapsed.
Police radio dispatches indicated that the victim was shot in the face and multiple times throughout his body.
Chicago police responded to the call of a person shot around 12:40 a.m. They said a 39-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Police were seen putting away what appeared to be a rifle as evidence.
Meanwhile, that long trail of blood left behind by the victim is shocking to people like Doug Prsalko as he came out of his building first thing in the morning.
"It's up and down the street, and this isn't the first time this has happened either," Prsalko said.
There was a shooting just last Sunday a couple of blocks from the crime scene of this weekend. In that incident, a quarrel between two men led to a fight, and one of the men took out a gun and sh
an argument between a 25-year-old man and another unknown man outside a nightclub turned into a fight. That's when the suspect pulled out a firearm and fired shots at the victim. The victim was hit in the rear and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition.
"Same deal," Psalko said. "Walked out the next morning to get food, a bunch of blood everywhere. It's not a great thing to see that's for sure. "
Sources close to security at nightclubs and bars in the River North area said that the shooting early Sunday did not involve any club patrons, and that the victim ran toward them for safety.
"Maybe stop the gatherings," Psalko said. "There's large gatherings sometimes over here, maybe people who aren't even going to the bars. It seems like that would be a good first step."
Chicago police said late Sunday, the investigation is ongoing, and so far, no one has been arrested.
Police were also looking for a specific car from which they believe the victim was shot.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
