2 teenage siblings killed, 1 injured in crash in McHenry, Illinois
A teenage brother and sister are dead, and another person was seriously injured, after a crash in McHenry, Illinois.
The driver accused of hitting their car now faces driving under the influence charges.
Police said a red 2006 Audi was headed south on Richmond Road when it collided with a black 2015 Nissan Sentra at the intersection of Richmond and McCullom Lake roads around 12:30 a.m. The cars also hit an unoccupied and parked Toyota Echo in the 1800 Block of Richmond Road.
Police said a 19-year-old woman was driving the Nissan, and she and her 14-year-old brother were killed in the crash. The impact of the crash flipped over their car, and a communications box was also destroyed.
The 18-year-old man driving the Audi was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with serious injuries. That driver, Jason Land of Fox River Grove, has now been charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in an accident causing death, and misdemeanor DUI.
Land was also cited for failure to reduce speed.
"Speed limit on this roadway is 35 miles per hour," said McHenry police Deputy Chief Thomas Walsh. "Preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor in this crash."
The father of the teenage sister and brother who were killed spoke briefly with CBS News Chicago on the phone, and said both are siblings and are his children. It was unclear where they were headed at the time of the crash.
