A mother will remain in jail after she was charged in the drowning death of her baby boy in Lake Michigan on Friday night.

Chicago police said Surah Amon, 31, was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of strong probability of death.

Amon did not appear at Monday's detention hearing as she remains hospitalized.

Officers responded to a call for service in the 7000 block of S. South Shore Drive just before 10 p.m.

Prosecutors said a relative called 911 and told police the mother was having a mental episode, left home with her baby, and went to the beach.

Amon went to the beach to attempt to commit suicide and kill her son, according to prosecutors.

She confessed to the police that she killed her son and was yelling. She had cuts to her wrists and told the police that her son was still in the water.

The body of the child was recovered by the Chicago Fire Department Marine Unit and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the child as 1-year-old Sir Watson.

Amon's next court date is scheduled for Tuesday for a status hearing.
