Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of Cook and Lake counties over the course of Sunday evening.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for northeastern Lake County Sunday night, but was dropped by around 9:30 p.m.

The storm that prompted the warning was seen over Wadsworth and near Gurnee moving north at 15 mph, with 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail.

Damage to roofs, siding, and trees was a risk.

During the storms, rain was seen falling sideways onto the parking lot at the Gurnee Mills mall.

An earlier warning was issued for southeast Lake and north central Cook counties until 8:45 p.m.  Affected areas initially included the North Shore and northwest suburbs from Lake Forest south to Park Ridge and Niles. The warning was later scaled back to some North Shore area suburbs within Cook County.

The Severe Thunderstorm warning was allowed to expire, but a Special Marine Warning remained in effect over Lake Michigan from Winthrop Harbor to Wilmette Harbor until 9:15 p.m. Boaters were advised to move to safe harbor immediately.
