A man was taken into custody following a search warrant operation in Elmhurst, Illinois, early Friday morning.

Elmhurst police issued a community alert around 6 a.m. advising the public to avoid the area of St. Charles Road at Sunnyside Avenue.

The department said they assisted law enforcement officers from DuPage County Metro SWAT to perform an arrest and search warrant operation at a home in the 300 block of South Sunnyside Avenue in Elmhurst.

Police said the suspect, Ronald J. McLaughlin, 50, was wanted on an arrest warrant stemming from an incident that happened on July 18, alleging charges of domestic violence and weapons offenses. The suspect refused multiple requests to turn himself in.

The operation concluded around 7:30 a.m.

St. Charles Road between Berkley Avenue and West Avenue was closed during the operation. All roads have since reopened.

Police said during the July 18 incident, a handgun and ammunition were recovered, and during Friday's operation, a rifle and ammunition were recovered by officers.

McLaughlin was charged with one count of domestic battery, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID card, and two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

He was taken to the DuPage County Judicial Center for his first appearance in court.

No further information was available.
