An hours-long SWAT standoff that followed a deadly shooting on Chicago's South Side ended without anyone in custody Wednesday morning.

Police said just after midnight, a 26-year-old man met another man for a car sale in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.  Police said the other man pulled out a gun and shot the 26-year-old in the head.

The victim, identified as Christian Duran Diaz, died at Holy Cross Hospital.

A witness told police they saw the shooter run into a nearby building, in the 7800 block of South Paulina Street, prompting officers to call the SWAT team.

The SWAT standoff lasted more than seven hours before police cleared the scene, but the suspected gunman was not found.

"I was in the bed asleep, but apparently I slept through the whole ordeal," said neighbor Tinyan Bluing.

A police source told CBS News Chicago that at some point while they were working to bring in more reinforcements, the suspect might have made his way out of the building.

Police scanner traffic indicated officers were looking for three people, but two got away in another vehicle — leaving them with one suspect who they thought was inside.

Sunny Bluing has lived in the neighborhood for the past 14 years. She said no violence has happened on Paulina until now.

She said she stepped outside Wednesday morning to a swarm of officers looking for the shooter.

"Did this really just happen on my block? You know, you never think it would happen on your block, because this block is usually always quiet. Other than that, I was shocked," she said. "Stuff always happening in Chicago, and it's really sad."

It's unclear if the victim and the gunman knew each other, or what prompted the shooting.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
