Colorado State Patrol called to help with wildfire evacuation in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control is working to contain a wildfire that broke out on the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Thursday.
Two fires are burning in the area, one near the south entrance of the canyon and another near the north rim. According to the National Park Service, lightning strikes started both fires.
The Montrose County Sheriff's Office said all access to the canyon via Highway 50 is closed.
They said the Colorado State Patrol has been called to help evacuate the campgrounds at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Area. Visitors and staff have reportedly been evacuated, and the park is closed until further notice, said the NPS.
According to the , the South Rim Fire has burned approximately 425 acres on the southwest side of Vernal Mesa. The fire on the north rim is reported to cover less than an acre and is located northwest of Poison Spring Hill. The NWS said high temperatures, very low humidity, and very dry vegetation led to extreme fire danger in the canyon, and Montrose County is under a Stage 1 fire restriction.
Authorities advised the public not to call 911 for updates so emergency crews can respond to the fires without interruption. They suggested following for updates.
No injuries have been reported.
