U.S. Highway 50 reopened in western Colorado as wildfire mop up continues
State fire officials said on Sunday that a new wildfire sparked in Montrose County, causing U.S. Highway 50 to close for several hours.
Fire officials are calling this new fire the Kinikin Fire, which caused the closure of U.S. 50 at Mile Marker 102, about 8 miles east of the center of the city of Montrose, for almost four hours.
An aircraft was ordered to help combat the fire, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control said, and resources that were being used to fight the nearby South Rim Fire were sent to help with the Kinikin Fire.
Highway 92 served as a detour during the closure, the Gunnison Regional 911 Center said on social media.
A photo from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control showed a large plume of smoke adjacent to the highway with a line of cars in the road. The fire burned approximately 15 acres. Crews are working to repair the damage to several power poles in the area as firefighters mop up and monitor the fire, said Montrose County.
Southwestern Colorado is still experiencing the impacts of several large wildfires, despite recent gains in containment efforts.
