The Denver Police Department has released new body-worn camera footage from a police shooting that took place earlier this month in the Montbello neighborhood.

According to DPD Major Crimes Division Commander Matt Clark, the incident occurred around 9:05 p.m. on July 1 near East 44th Avenue and Andrews Drive. During a routine patrol, two officers noticed a mortar tube outside a home where four individuals were standing. As they approached the group, one man, who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly walked toward a nearby garage, ignoring the officers' commands to stop.

Police say the man then reached toward his waistband for a gun. One of the officers fired two shots, striking the suspect in the leg.

The bodycam footage, released during a department briefing Tuesday, captures the moment shots were fired and provides more context to the ongoing investigation.

Commander Clark noted that while DPD has had hundreds of armed encounters so far this year, only six have resulted in officer-involved shootings, less than 1%. "That's because, generally, we gain compliance," Clark said.

The officers involved have been placed in the department's reintegration program, which is standard procedure following incidents involving the use of force.

The suspect is expected to recover from his injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed what charges he may face.

DPD says the investigation remains active.
