Van Buren Township police say a shelter-in-place order has been lifted for residents following an active shooter situation Wednesday afternoon.

Van Buren police responded to a home in the 49000 block of Bog Road around 11:55 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a man firing a long gun and a handgun from his home. The caller told police that children were present in the area at the time of the shooting and fled to safety.

"At that time, we really didn't know what we had; we didn't know if we had victims. We didn't know if this was going to turn into a barricaded gunman situation, so we put that right away to try to ensure people's safety," said Detective Lt. Ken Floro of the Van Buren Township Police Department.

Police quickly established a barrier around the property where they found the suspect exiting his home and firing several rounds from the back of the property using both a handgun and a long gun.

The man later exited his home and entered a vehicle parked in his driveway, police say. As members of the Western Wayne Special Operations Team approached the scene, the man reportedly exited the vehicle and began walking back to his home.

Police arrested the suspect, a 42-year-old man, who they say was "highly intoxicated."

Authorities say the man did not aim or fire his guns at anyone.

No injuries have been reported, and officers did not discharge their weapons.

An investigation is ongoing.
