Little Haiti dispute ends in gunfire, 2 people in the hospital 02:23

A connection has been made between a bullet-ridden SUV found on the side of I-95 on Monday afternoon and a shooting in Little Haiti in which two people were injured, according to police.

Around 2 p.m., investigators said there was dispute between two groups of people at NW 56 Street and NW 3 Avenue that resulted in shots being fired by both sides.

Two people, one from each group, were struck by gunfire according to police.

An SUV was riddled with bullets as it sped away from the scene. It ultimately became disabled on I-95. A 16-year-old, who was shot behind the ear, was found near I-95 and NW 79 Street and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The other person shot, a 20-year-old man, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by a family member. Both were listed as stable and the police said they are expected to be okay.

A mother of six said the moment she heard the gunshots in her neighborhood, her thoughts went to her children.

"I ran in their rooms and checked on them to just to make sure they were good," she said. "My four-year-old, he thought it was firecrackers because that's the first thing he said, 'Oh mommy I hear the firecrackers'," she said.

She said the shooting hit close to home in more ways than one.

"I went through that before with my oldest son. He was 16 when he got shot four years ago. Twelve bullets, but he survived," she said.

Miami police said at this time, no arrests have been made.
