A man was shot multiple times and two North Miami police officers were injured during a shooting involving a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

North Miami Police Chief Cherise Gause said officers were investigating a stolen vehicle around 4:15 p.m. in the 400 block of Northeast 137th Street.

"Shortly thereafter, gunfire was exchanged by officers and a male subject was shot multiple times," Gause said.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, which assisted in the response, confirmed one of its deputies fired a weapon. It remains unclear if a North Miami officer or any suspects discharged firearms during the exchange.

North Miami Police said two of their officers were injured during the incident, but neither was struck by gunfire.

"We are still working out the details. As you know, the investigation is still fresh," Gause added.

As law enforcement remained at the scene for several hours, some residents expressed frustration and concern over what they described as frequent police activity in the area.

"This area is very, very dangerous. It's a very dangerous area. It's not safe for the kids to go out," said one resident. "Well, I'm not comfortable. I'm not safe at all."

Another neighbor said the police presence no longer surprised him. "Doesn't faze me, it's the norm," he said, adding that he had been stuck in his home for more than three hours.

Despite police assurances that the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat, some residents were unconvinced.

Two suspects were taken into custody. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now leading the investigation.

The identities of the suspects, the injured man and the officers involved have not been released.
