Teen girl shot in chest on Palmetto Expressway in Miami Gardens; FHP searches for suspect
Authorities are searching for the person who shot a teenage girl in the chest Tuesday evening as she rode in a car on the Palmetto Expressway near Miami Gardens.
It happened in the eastbound lanes of State Road 826 near NW 47 Avenue around 9 p.m.
The teen was sitting in the front passenger seat of a white Hyundai when someone in a black mid-sized sedan fired on her car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The teen, who was hit in the chest, was taken to the Ryder Trauma with what the FHP said were non-life threatening injuries.
The eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down for approximately two hours for the shooting investigation. They have since re-opened.
South Florida authorities possibly looking for a Chevy Malibu
The FHP said shooter's vehicle was possibly a black Chevy Malibu with a broken blue fog light.
FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said this incident is concerning.
"Our advice always is, if you get in a confrontation, don't get in a confrontation with anybody, don't make eye contact with anybody who is aggressive out there. Do contact FHP as quickly as possible so we can get somebody out there. If you need to stop somewhere, be smart. Drive off highway, go to gas station, police station, fire station, anywhere that's lit and try to get away from the situation," FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the FHP by dialing *347 on a cellphone.
