Shooting involving police in Wilton Manors began as domestic dispute between husband and wife
Shooting involving police in Wilton Manors began as domestic dispute between husband and wife 02:33

A domestic disturbance call early Wednesday morning led to a shooting involving an officer, according to Wilton Manors police.

It happened in front of a home on NE 26 Street, just off Andrews Avenue. According to police, around 4:30 a.m. they received a call from a woman about a domestic dispute involving her husband.

When officers arrived they were met by an armed man at the front door, police said.

"An officer-involved shooting occurred and the subject was injured," according to their statement.

In an audio recording between an officer and police dispatch, he described what happened.

"I would say, (he went) to the door with a shotgun in hand, pointed it at officers, shots fired. Right now the subject is down, rendering aid," an officer told the police dispatcher.

The injured man was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue where he's listed in critical condition, according to police.

Neighbor Greg Kodelman was already up as all of this was unfolding. "I saw the two of them come out of the house, husband and wife. And they were out in the front yard and went back in the house. Next thing I know. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, like up to 15 times," he said.

He said the man hit was Larry Stroud.

CBS News Miami got an email from his wife Jessica "Sariya" Jones.

"I have shared all the pertinent information I have at this time. It was a terrible, terrible accident. One I witnessed just inches away. My husband is a good man and a good protector. He comes from a great family and we value gun safety in this home. He would never disrespect law enforcement. I understand the police were acting on what they believed to be a threat. But please stop reporting that there was some sort of domestic dispute. I was a worried wife just wanting my husband home safe. And now I am uncertain of his survival. Please respect my privacy at this moment. Thank you."

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Neighbors stunned by shooting

Diego Trejo, who lives behind the home, said he heard the gunfire.

"I was thinking it was fireworks. It was like six, seven shoots (sic), uh gunshots, and that's it. We saw a lot of cops around," he said.

Trejos said he heard screaming and the gunfire around 4:45 a.m.

"It's kind of scary because we don't know if somebody break into the house behind us."

Multiple neighbors said they never had any problems with the couple who lives in the home.

"They are a really nice couple. They just finished doing work in our house and (they're) really friendly," a woman who lives nearby said.

Wilton Manors police said they are conducting an investigation into the shooting with the assistance of the Broward Sheriff's Office.

"We are going to be referring this investigation to the Broward Sheriff's Office and FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement)," Wilton Manors Det. Haley Plante said.

An FDLE investigation into an officer-involved shooting is standard protocol for law enforcement in the state.
