Two men are dead after a stabbing on the 34th floor of a Brickell high-rise building early Sunday morning, police said.

The incident has prompted a warning from Miami Police Chief Manny Morales to people to stay vigilant and secure their homes to prevent crimes, and he also said there was no threat to the public.

Miami Police said they were called to the Icon Residences at 485 Brickell Ave. around 2:16 a.m. after a report of a man having been stabbed. They said when they arrived, they found that the man was dead.

They also said surveillance tape showed one man fleeing, and they say they discovered his body at a building that was under construction across the street. They are not saying how he died or if the two men knew each other, but they do have a warning for people to keep their doors locked and not open to strangers.

It was a very active scene as a SWAT team was involved, along with a police drone and K-9 units. The two men have not been identified.

"We are totally clueless as to why this happened and that is part of the investigation because of what leaked or this and there was no party going on and there was not a large group," Miami Police spokesman Ofc. Mike Vega told CBS News Miami. "It seems like whoever did just went into this apartment."

"We are still looking for articles of interest, such as maybe a knife, a gun, any weapon or clothing," he added.

Morales released a statement, saying, "I want to assure the community that we are thoroughly investigating this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the victim's loved ones during this difficult time. We are also working to understand the circumstances surrounding the suspect's death. At this moment, there is no threat to public safety, and we encourage everyone to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to secure their homes regularly to prevent crime and ensure their safety."

"It's pretty scary coming to Miami and you do not expect things to happen in the same building that you are in," Robert Roper, a resident who lives on the 23rd floor, told CBS News Miami. "I know a lot of people were worried about what was going on and you see a lot of police here. They are canvassing the area, and there is a lot of security."

"Apparently, there was an altercation upstairs, and there was a trail of blood along the street over to the other street and to a car park. It is a little bit unsettling at the moment," he added. "Hopefully, it was something relative to them and not random."

CBS News Miami asked about the warning to lock your doors and not open them to strangers, and Roper said, "That is right."
