A man allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in an apparent murder-suicide early Sunday, Miami police say.

At about 7:40 a.m., Miami police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex near the 2000 block of NW 18th Court.

When officers arrived, they found the body of a woman shot in the chest, and a man dead in the parking lot, according to Michael Vega, public information officer with the city of Miami Police Department.

Based on video surveillance and witness statements, police said, "It appears to be a murder-suicide by ex-boyfriend."

Investigators have not released the names of the two people involved in this shooting, and police are still looking into what caused it.

Neighbors say they heard gunshots and screaming

CBS News Miami spoke to one neighbor who didn't want his face shown. He said the crime scene tape at this apartment building disturbs him.

"Nowadays, it's better to stay at home," the neighbor said. "Better to stay at home. Definitely got a gun problem up here."

Jose Puello told CBS News Miami that only his wife and three kids were home when this happened.

"She heard four or five shots, and that there were people screaming in the hallways," he said.

Puello said she heard gunshots. When he got a call from his wife, he came home.

"[When] one has kids, people shooting around like that, it can affect you," Puello said.

In the meantime, Puello says the thought of a murder suicide in his neighborhood isn't sitting well with him.

"It's right there. We were close to this uncomfortable situation. Most of all, my wife and my daughter," Puello said.

If anyone has any information on the incident, they are advised to call Miami Police.
