A man shot his sister and mother before dying by suicide inside a south Minneapolis apartment during a domestic dispute early Tuesday, police said.

The sister is also dead, while the mother was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

"This appears to be a heartbreaking tragedy that has destroyed a family," Police Chief Brian O'Hara said. "While the investigation is ongoing, our hearts are with the surviving family members as we work to understand what occurred."

The Minneapolis Police Department said officers responded to a reported shooting on the 100 block of East 59th Street just before 12:40 a.m.

The brother and sister, both in their 20s, were dead by the time police arrived.

None of the family members have been publicly identified. Police are investigating what led to the shooting.

About two hours earlier, two Minneapolis officers were hurt while responding to a separate domestic call on the 900 block of 21st Avenue South. The officers were treated at a hospital and released.
