Man charged in Apple Valley killing may be fleeing to Mexico, police say
Police are looking for a 20-year-old man accused of killing another man in Apple Valley, Minnesota, over the weekend.
Aron Isait Medina Rojas is charged with second-degree murder in the killing, according to court documents filed in Dakota County. He was charged via warrant and remains at large.
The Apple Valley Police Department earlier identified Medina Rojas as a suspect after officers found a man dying on a sidewalk at the intersection of Pennock Avenue and 138th Street Sunday morning. A criminal complaint identifies the victim as 21-year-old Daniel Aguilar.
Aguilar's family told police he was with his girlfriend the night before he died. When officers went to her home, they saw her leave in a car and followed her to the scene of the killing, the complaint states. They confronted her and she said she was looking for Aguilar's phone.
In an interview with police, the girlfriend said a friend of hers was upset she was at a club with Aguilar that night. She and Aguilar left and drove to a parking lot in Apple Valley, where they argued, according to the complaint. She started walking away, at which point her friend arrived with her boyfriend, Medina Rojas. Medina Rojas and his girlfriend drove Aguilar's girlfriend to another friend's house. According to the complaint, Aguilar's girlfriend returned to the scene when the location of his phone didn't change for several hours.
Medina Rojas' girlfriend contacted law enforcement hours after the killing, telling them that after she and Medina Rojas dropped Aguilar's girlfriend off, they went to confront Aguilar.
According to the complaint, she said Aguilar "became aggressive with her," prompting Medina Rojas to fight him. She said she saw Aguilar "extend an arm before sitting down on the sidewalk." Then, she said, "[Medina Rojas] returned to the car with blood on his shirt and told her they had to leave."
An autopsy determined Aguilar died of multiple sharp force injuries.
Surveillance videos from the area captured the killing and the preceding events, the complaint states.
Police suspect Medina Rojas may be attempting to go to Mexico.
Medina Rojas has a 2017 gray Chrysler 300 with a Minnesota license plate "SKU892," according to police, though it is unknown if he is still using that vehicle.
Anyone who sees Medina Rojas is advised to call 911 immediately. Those who have information on his whereabouts should call the Apple Valley Police Department at 952-322-2323.
