Two people are dead after a domestic disturbance led to a car chase and law enforcement shooting in southern Minnesota Tuesday evening, according to officials.

The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded at 7:12 p.m. to a residence on the 21000 block of 880th Avenue in rural Albert Lea for a "domestic disturbance possibly involving firearms." They learned a man had fled the scene and was possibly heading to Mower County.

Deputies in that county found the suspect driving and began chasing him. He returned to the home on 880th Avenue and exited his vehicle. That's when deputies discharged their firearms, the sheriff's office said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

While searching the property, authorities found a dead woman. It's believed she died before law enforcement got to the scene.

Authorities have not released the causes of death for the man and woman. Their relationship is unclear, as is whether the man was armed at the time of the shooting.

The sheriff's office says its deputies involved are on critical leave, and at least part of what happened was captured on body cameras.

Officers from the Albert Lea Police Department, troopers from the Minnesota State Patrol and deputies from Freeborn and Mower counties all responded to the call, and it is also unclear if any opened fire.

The sheriff's office says more information will be released "in the coming days."

Albert Lea is about 95 miles south of Minneapolis.
