Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in Isanti County Fair crash, officials say
A race truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries at the Isanti County Fair in Cambridge, Minnesota, Thursday night.
"Last night that turn we were sitting by seemed to be the hot spot for crashes," said Lacie Mohs.
Mohs was inside the Isanti County Grandstand for what was being called the "Night of Destruction" event. She said two crashes happened right in front of her. One driver walked away from the scene. The other did not.
"Then you look over and you just see this black pickup truck that's pancaked to the ground," said Mohs. "I don't think I've heard so many people be so silent for the amount of time that they were. Just hoping and praying that he was going to be able walk out of it."
Mohs said the crash occurred during an 8-cylinder race involving trucks. She said the crowd watched as the driver was finally removed from his vehicle and first responders performed CPR on him for several minutes.
"Then they essentially ended up saying a couple of prayers and then they said, 'I'm sorry, the show is over.' And at that point the LifeLink was making its way to the Grandstand," said Mohs.
The man was airlifted to North Memorial Health in the Twin Cities with life-threatening injuries.
Race fans said the trucks don't have protective roll cages on them during these events. Some witnesses believe a roll cage may have helped in this crash.
"In this case, I don't think I've ever seen a truck so flat on the ground," said Mohs. "I'm losing sleep over this because this sticks with you — watching that happen and watching them try and save somebody. I have not been able to stop thinking about him."
