An iconic Minneapolis landmark undergoing construction has reopened months ahead of schedule.

The Stone Arch Bridge closed in April 2024 and was originally scheduled to open in spring 2026. Earlier this month, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced it would open on Aug. 9, but officials then said that the bridge would open on Monday.

Crews were working to repair stone and mortar to slow the bridge's deterioration.

During construction, pedestrians were able to go to the middle of the 2,100 foot long bridge, but had to turn around at the closure point.

Those who live nearby say it's been a long time coming, but it was a happy surprise to see the bridge back in action.

"It was great to go across again. We hiked over this bridge hundreds of times," said resident Chuck Johnston. "It's gonna get me out bicycling a little more, so that's good."

"I don't know if I can adequately express how thrilled I am to end a construction project, and not telling you 94 will be closing Friday night once again," Gov. Tim Walz said Monday afternoon.

He added that the $38.5 million project stayed on budget, and there were no injuries during the repair process. Roughly $33.3 million of the project's funds came from the federal government; the rest was allocated by the state.

There will be , featuring food trucks, live entertainment and more.

The bridge was built in 1883 as a railroad project, bringing 80 passenger trains a day to downtown Minneapolis at its peak, according to the . Hennepin County bought the bridge for $1,001 in 1989 and ownership of the bridge transferred to the state in the '90s, when it was converted into a pedestrian bridge.
