Public safety limits Taste of Minnesota crowd, disappointing some ticket holders
Great food and big-time entertainers brought 140,000 people to downtown Minneapolis over the weekend for . But some fans who had free tickets Sunday night were turned away.
People reported waiting outside the outdoor festival in Minneapolis and waiting to get in when others left. However, they were not let inside.
"I am a little upset that I can't make the event," Jose Salazar of South St. Paul said.
Salazar got a free ticket and was hoping to see his favorite rapper, Ludacris.
Organizers say the event reached capacity before he took the stage as a headliner. They said capacity was set by public safety officials, not Taste of Minnesota.
"I don't know why they can't have a backup plan. A lot of people are clearly leaving. Can't they do a one person in and one person out system?" Salazar said.
The event says 60,000 people attended the festival on Saturday and 75,000 attended on Sunday.
Fans who did make it in, like Adrian Perryman, were thrilled.
"It was a great concert. He was at the State Fair last year [and] performed some of the same things. I really enjoyed myself," Perryman said.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who attended the event on Sunday, said the weekend was a big success and a larger effort to bring people and businesses downtown.
"We are trying to bring people back that haven't experienced downtown in a few years, and what we are finding is that when they do, they have an awesome time and go back and tell their friends, whether they live in the south side or any other suburb around downtown," Frey said.
Organizers say they plan to make ticket adjustments for next year to avoid having to turn people away.
