FDNY firefighter killed in FDR motorcycle crash
An FDNY firefighter was killed in a motorcycle crash early Thursday morning on the FDR Drive in Manhattan.
Police said the victim fell off his motorcycle and then was hit by another vehicle that fled the scene. The crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on the FDR Drive at 23rd Street.
The firefighter was identified as Matthew Goicochea, who worked at Ladder 41 in the Bronx. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In 2024, Goicochea was awarded the FDNY's Thomas Wylie medal for saving an unconscious person from a house fire in the Bronx, the FDNY said.
Thursday's crash shut down all northbound lanes of the FDR Drive at 23rd Street, causing heavy delays for the morning commute. Chopper 2 , where traffic was backed up past the Brooklyn Bridge.
The northbound lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m., but delays persisted.
