Shots fired in Midwood, Brooklyn post office during attempted robbery, police say
Shots were fired during an attempted robbery at a post office in Midwood, Brooklyn on Monday afternoon.
It happened at around 1:15 p.m. at the Midwood Station Post Office on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue J.
Police say the gunman stormed into the post office with his gun out. He then allegedly put the gun to the back of a woman, 37, who was the only customer inside at the time. Then he demanded cash from the post office employees.
The postal workers took off, and the gunman then pushed the woman away, and ran for the door, firing shots as he ran away. He took off on a moped. .
Fortunately, no one was injured.
Chopper 2 flew over the scene, and could see crime scene tape outside the building, along with several officers.
Police say that a short time later, the same man, this time wearing a helmet and wearing a red backpack, tried to rob a check cashing shop on Utica Avenue. Nothing was stolen in the second incident, and he then took off on the moped, but crashed as he was trying to get away.
Responding officers arrested him and recovered a gun.
The suspect is in custody, and charges are pending.
