Philadelphia police investigating if North Philly triple shooting, hit-and-run are connected
Philadelphia police are investigating the possible connection between a shooting in North Philly that injured three people and a nearby hit-and-run where an off-duty officer was struck early Sunday morning.
Investigators said officers responded to reports of a shooting and a large crowd, involving a mix of adults and juveniles, just before 1:30 a.m. at North 22nd and Edgley streets. After arriving, police said they found a male who had been shot in the back and thigh and then brought him to Temple University Hospital.
Not too long later, a juvenile boy and a woman, also suffering from gunshot wounds, arrived at the hospital. Police said all three victims are stable.
Investigators believe the shooting began during a fight at the gathering when several unidentified males opened fire. Police said they found bullet casings, fragments and blood evidence in the courtyard of a nearby housing complex.
Officers were then called to a hit-and-run where an off-duty police officer was hit by a car that ran a red light at 18th and Diamond streets, according to police.
Investigators said the car had a bullet hole in the windshield and fled before police arrived, but was later recovered and towed for further evaluation. The officer was brought to Temple Hospital and is said to be stable, according to police.
The Philadelphia Police Department's Shooting Investigation Group is investigating the incidents.
