Massive fire breaks out overnight in Midland Borough
A massive fire broke out overnight in Midland Borough.
The fire broke out along Midland Avenue around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, dispatchers said.
Hours later, flames were still ripping through the building.
Dispatchers said that three people were initially trapped inside the building but were rescued by firefighters. State troopers, local police, and firefighters all put themselves in danger to accomplish the early morning rescue.
Even before that, passersby saw the flames and began honking their car horns, successfully waking up those sleeping inside. The residents of the building awoke and immediately ran to the ledge to escape the flames.
"We were out there. The police department came, the fire department got it, got the ladders down, we got out," said resident Garrett Brethaur, one of those rescued. "We were up there for about 15 minutes. It was pretty bad; we couldn't breathe, [and] we couldn't see anything inside the apartment at all. We were able to get our cat out."
KDKA's news crew at the scene could see that part of the roof appeared to collapse due to the fire.
In all, 10 people have been displaced because of the blaze.
It's unclear what sparked the flames at this time. An investigation is ongoing.
