Search and rescue teams recover child's body from Monongahela River
Search and rescue teams have recovered the body of a child from the Monongahela River.
The boy, identified as 12-year-old Rontae Lester, drowned while swimming with friends in the Monongahela River on Saturday, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said via a news release.
A friend in the group called Washington County 911 at 10:51 a.m. to alert first responders that Lester had disappeared while in the water.
Crews were dispatched to the river near the Donora-Monessen Bridge around 11 a.m.
A Washington County 911 official confirmed to KDKA-TV that the Donora Fire Company began leading the search with several other area agencies, and sonar technology was deployed to assist those on the scene.
Divers located Lester submerged on the riverbed just before 3:30 p.m., Coroner Warco added.
The Donora Borough Police Department is leading an investigation into the incident.
