Heavy rains bring flash flooding to Pittsburgh area
Severe weather swept through the Pittsburgh area on Friday, leading to flash flooding and water rescues.
Amid the Friday rush hour, heavy rains produced flooding in multiple communities in Allegheny County, including Monroeville and Rankin. Parts of Westmoreland County, including Greensburg and Jeannette, were also impacted by the storms.
KDKA First Alert Meteorologist Ray Petelin said about 3 inches of rain fell across the two counties over 90 minutes Friday evening.
The weather also led to a rain delay for the Pirates' game against the Phillies at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Vehicle trapped in rapidly rising water in Pittsburgh area
A vehicle was nearly completely submerged in water on the Tri-Boro Expressway in Monroville after flooding from heavy rain covered the road in rising water. Police responded to the scene.
In Turtle Creek, The Wolvarena was partially flooded after torrential rains hit the area.
that there were reports of flooded roads and vehicles being stranded in floodwaters near Pitcairn.
A spokesperson for Allegheny County said swift water rescue teams were sent to impacted areas, including North Versailles and White Oak. At least three rescues were made from two homes in North Versailles, and one person was rescued from a car in floodwaters in White Oak.
Debris scattered across community after flash flooding
The streets in Wall Borough, Allegheny County, were covered in debris after flash flooding rolled through the community.
Residents of the borough said they had never seen water levels like the ones on Friday. Valley Avenue was one of the areas that were hit hard.
"It was like someone opened a floodgate," resident Pattie Marshall said. "It was like a river rushing down the road."
The flooding left a mess in the borough. A shed was moved off its foundation and pushed into a vehicle that was against a fence. Numerous homes suffered water damage.
"Looks pretty bad," Marshall said. "The road's tore up. I have water coming through the walls in my basement and into my living room."
Some emergency crews struggled to reach those in need because of the flooded roads, but authorities said there were no reported injuries in the borough.
"I'm just glad everyone's safe out of all this," resident Holly Pindro said. "And there will be a little recovery after all this, and we should be all right."
Flash flooding alerts in Pittsburgh area
Parts of Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Washington, Venango and Westmoreland counties were under flash flood warnings on Friday, but all flash flood warnings have since expired.
