Long-term paving projects getting underway today in Westmoreland County
Long-term paving projects are getting underway today in several parts of Westmoreland County, including a busy stretch of Route 30 in North Huntingdon Township.
The projects will impact five state roads throughout the county.
The resurfacing work will be taking place along Route 30 in North Huntingdon Township and Unity Township, Clopper Street in Greensburg, Pittsburgh Street in East Huntingdon Township, Youghiogheny Street in Adamsburg, and Hancock Avenue in Allegheny Township.
PennDOT said Tresco Paving Corporation crews will improve surfaces on these roads by leveling, repairing, milling, and marking the pavement as part of a $11.3 million project.
All routes will see single-lane, alternating traffic, and the work is expected to take place on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Drivers around Westmoreland County know how busy Route 30 can get.
"Route 30 is very congested," said Lyft driver Karel Pienaar. "Really bottlenecks everything, and it will be difficult for the local people here," said Piennar.
"There's clearly the need for the infrastructure, but the timing, again, the timing is really challenging for those of us that are making constant commutes getting kids to and from daycares, school, working, both parents. It's tough," said Zach Brown.
It'll be tough not only for drivers here, on Lincoln Highway in North Huntingdon and Unity townships, but along four other state routes.
"The routes in and around the city are also all under construction. As somebody who commutes between Westmoreland County and Pittsburgh for work daily, it's going to throw a wrench in the works, that's for sure," said Brown.
"Sometimes you have to sacrifice a little bit to get a better result in the end. So, we'll just deal with it," Pienaar said.
The work is expected to continue until October.
Flaggers will be in the area to guide people around the work, which PennDOT says is part of an $11.3 million project.
