Innocent Sacramento driver dies after suspect crashes during pursuit on Florin Road
An innocent driver died after a domestic violence suspect led Sacramento police on a pursuit, eventually causing a seven-vehicle crash on Florin Road Saturday afternoon, police said.
The incident began when officers with the Sacramento Police Department responded to the 7300 block of Farm Dale Way around 10:15 a.m. for a keep the peace call. A caller reported she was a victim of domestic violence last weekend and she needed to get belongings from a home where she believed the suspect may be.
Police confirmed they responded to the home last weekend, but the suspect took off from the scene before officers arrived.
When officers arrived on Saturday, the suspect was located in a vehicle near the home. When officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, the suspect took off, eventually turning westbound on Florin Road, police said.
This is when the driver crashed into multiple vehicles at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive, police said.
An innocent driver who was involved in the crash died at the scene, police said. His identification will be released when the next of kin is notified.
After the crash, the suspect took off running but was eventually detained, police said. Police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Daniel Cunningham of Sacramento.
Cunningham was taken to the hospital before being booked into jail for a parole violation, domestic violence and felony pursuit charges, police said.
Seven vehicles were involved in the crash. The extent of the injuries for all involved was not immediately known.
Due to the crash and Sacramento Police investigation, westbound Florin Road, west of I-5, and the southbound I-5 off-ramp to westbound Florin Road were closed. The northbound I-5 off-ramp to westbound Florin Road was closed as well.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene to take over the investigation, who will determine if more charges will be filed.
