A teen boy has been hospitalized after going missing in the Mokelumne River in Lodi, officials said Thursday evening.

CBS Sacramento watched as first responders placed the boy's body on a stretcher. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body was recovered shortly after 6 p.m. and initially said the boy had died.

However, around 7 p.m., the sheriff's office sent out an updated press release that said the boy was in the hospital in an unknown condition.

The City of Lodi said he was swimming in the Mokelumne River near Lodi Lake when he went missing. Lodi police said it received the initial call for assistance around 4:45 p.m. when the teen went underwater and never resurfaced.

Lodi police said officers arrived at the river within minutes, followed by fire department personnel and sheriff's units.

As the search was underway, CBS Sacramento spoke with family members of the boy who said he is 14 years old.

Law enforcement officials said that civilians were helping with the search, and a dive team and aerial unit responded to assist.
