Man arrested after SWAT standoff in Grapevine road rage shooting that injured 7-year-old boy, police say
Grapevine police have arrested a 59-year-old man accused of firing into a pickup truck during a Thursday night road rage incident that left a 7-year-old boy injured, the department announced Friday morning.
The suspect, identified as John Schwoyer, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in custody.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Thursday along the northbound lanes of State Highway 121 near Bass Pro Drive. According to police, a man called 911 saying another driver had shot into his pickup truck while he was traveling with his family — including three children.
The father told police he returned fire in self-defense, then followed the suspect while providing dispatchers with the vehicle and license plate information. He was directed to stop at a nearby RaceTrac gas station on Grapevine Mills Parkway for safety, police said.

Medics treated the man's 7-year-old son, who was injured by shattered glass, and transported him to the hospital. An adult passenger in the truck also suffered minor injuries from the glass and was treated at the scene, police said. The other two children were not hurt.
Based on the license plate information, police identified the suspect's car as a silver Infiniti heading north on FM-2499 and traced it to a home on Big Canyon Drive in Flower Mound. Officers contacted the registered owner by phone, but he soon disconnected and refused further communication, according to a Grapevine police press release.
Police arrest Flower Mound man after overnight SWAT standoff
Due to concerns about public safety and the suspect's access to a weapon, Grapevine police worked with Flower Mound officers to set up a perimeter outside the home. Grapevine detectives, drone operators, and members of the Northeast Tarrant County Area SWAT Team began negotiations Thursday overnight.
Around 2:15 a.m. Friday, the suspect exited his home and was taken into custody without further incident, police said. He was examined by medics as a precaution, medically cleared, and booked into the Grapevine Detention Center.
