Dallas police fatally shoot knife-wielding suspect who advanced on officers, authorities say
A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by Dallas police Wednesday morning after a violent encounter in Old East Dallas. The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. near I-30 and Winslow Avenue.
Witnesses describe chaotic scene
Michael Turner, a resident of the neighborhood, said the man had already attacked a woman in her car before approaching his home.
"She saw the guy cut himself on the throat... He cut himself, and she screamed and ran in the house," Turner told CBS News Texas.
Turner said his adult niece was the first to notice the commotion and ran inside to alert the family. The man, bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, then attempted to break into their home.
"He comes to our door and tries to kick it in... he kept trying to kick it in 3, 4, 5 times," Turner said. "We had called the police. Police showed up. He walked down the street. Police cornered him... and they say, 'Hey, look, drop the knife, drop the knife.' They said it several times. They were very patient."
Police response and use of force
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux confirmed that officers responded to the scene and attempted to de-escalate the situation. According to Comeaux, officers used non-lethal methods, including a Taser, which did not affect the suspect.
The man reportedly refused to drop the knife and advanced toward officers, prompting them to open fire. The number of shots fired has not yet been disclosed.
Turner corroborated the police account, stating that officers gave multiple warnings before using deadly force.
Investigation ongoing
The Dallas Police Department has not released the suspect's identity. The incident remains under investigation.
