An investigation is underway after a Dallas police officer shot and injured a suspect in a nightclub parking lot overnight, officials said.

Dallas PD said the incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning at Escapade, a nightclub located in the 10700 block of Finnell Street.

According to investigators, uniformed-off-duty officers were working a security job when they heard a gunshot and then witnessed a fight going on in the parking lot of the business. The officers said the suspect had a gun in his hand and they gave him "loud verbal commands" to drop the weapon, but the suspect didn't comply and ran away.

More DPD officers confronted the suspect, according to the news release, and the suspect again refused to drop the weapon after receiving multiple verbal commands. DPD said one officer fired his handgun, hitting the suspect. It's unclear if that officer was one of the uniformed off-duty officers working at the club.

DPD Chief Daniel Comeaux said the suspect is recovering in the hospital after suffering a shot to the shoulder.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The names of the people involved have not been released at this time.

DPD said the Office of Community Police Oversight was notified and responded to the scene, as well as the Dallas County District Attorney's Office, which will conduct its own investigation.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
