A young girl was killed after a fireworks mishap on the Fourth of July in Buena Park, authorities said.

In a , the Buena Park Police Department said officers responded to the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle after seeing large quantities of fireworks at about 9:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers saw family members frantically carrying an 8-year-old girl into a home, who was suffering from serious injuries. Police said her injuries were "consistent with a fireworks-related explosion."

The girl was treated at the scene before being transported to the University of California, Irvine hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said investigations revealed that the homeowner was using illegal fireworks when they misfired toward the home where the child was. That initial misfire ignited other illegal fireworks, police said, which exploded and fatally injured the young girl.

Several others were also in the area, although no other significant injuries were reported.

The homeowner was arrested, police said, but didn't disclose the charges they'll potentially face. The Orange County District Attorney's Office is set to review the case.

No additional details were immediately made available. The identity of the child was not publicly revealed.
