A Los Angeles Police Department officer was hospitalized after a shooting in Exposition Park on Saturday afternoon.

Officers assigned to the department's gang enforcement detail were in the area near Martin Luther King Jr. Park, located at Western Avenue and W. 39th Place, at around 3:45 p.m., according to LAPD officials.

When they tried to approach the suspect, whom they wanted to question, he began to run away, officers said. They began to chase him on foot, at which point the suspect opened fire.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell gave further details on the shooting during a press conference outside of the hospital where the officer was taken later Saturday.

He said that the suspect fired multiple shots, one of which struck an officer. He is in stable condition after being taken to Dignity Health-California Hospital Medical Center.

Police said that the suspect was arrested at the scene and was not struck by gunfire.

No further information was provided.

The suspect was not identified, but McDonnell said that they would likely be charged with attempted murder on a peace officer.
