Los Angeles mayor slams "outrageous and un-American" federal immigration enforcement sweep through MacArthur Park
A visibly angry Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Monday blasted the Trump administration's continued immigration enforcement push throughout the city amid reports of a large-scale operation near downtown.
Bass said she was on her way to a news conference with Gov. Gavin Newsom in Pasadena when she was alerted to an immigration enforcement operation at MacArthur Park in L.A.'s Westlake District. She directed her driver to turn around and head toward the park, where she demanded that the operation end.
"To me, this is another example of the administration ratcheting up chaos by deploying what looked like a military operation in an American city," Bass said. "You can spin it anyway you like, but in my opinion, it's a political agenda of provoking fear and terror."
SKYCAL first captured visuals of the operation at about 10:45 a.m., as officers on horseback moved from one end of the park to the other. Officers didn't take anyone into custody at that time.
Trump has by stating that Democrat-run cities like L.A. "use illegal aliens to expand their voter base, cheat in elections, and grow the welfare State, robbing good-paying jobs and benefits from hardworking American citizens."
City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson challenged the legitimacy of the operation on Monday afternoon, saying that the scene looked like the "staging for a TikTok video."
"If you want to film in L.A., you should apply for a film permit like everybody else," he said.
At around 11:05 a.m., Mayor Karen Bass exited a vehicle and approached CBP officers in an unannounced visit. At one point, a CBP officer handed Bass a cell phone.
"Frankly, it is outrageous and un-American that we have federal armed vehicles in our parks when nothing is going on in the parks," she said.
Bass said that when federal agents arrived, a children's summer camp was taking place at the park.
"I went and I spoke to an 8-year-old [who told] me that he was afraid of ICE taking his parents, and he didn't think it was good to take people away," Bass said, while slamming the podium with her fist.
The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on the operation. Authorities did not report any arrests.
