Steeped in patriotism and small-town charm, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea celebrated the nation's independence with its annual Fourth of July Parade and Family Fun Day.

The day-long celebration features a festive parade, family-friendly activities, and a beachfront fireworks display. Many attendees came dressed head to toe in red, white and blue, soaking in the festive, tight-knit atmosphere the town is known for.

"It's all about independence, freedom and enjoying our community," resident Sharon Pidgeon said as she watched the parade.

The Aufiero family was celebrating their child's first Fourth of July, hoping to impart patriotism at a young age.

"To know America is the greatest country and celebrate America and just enjoy this day," Paige Aufiero said.

Some showed up dressed in patriotic threads to celebrate America's birthday.

"I'm a very big fan of the Fourth of July. We always have a big party. We have to dress the part. We're very proud to be from this country and we're psyched each year," Jill Paden said.

The Padens said they've been attending the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea event for years.

"We're very proud to be Americans. We're proud to be from this country and I'm proud of our ability to protest and stand up for what we believe in," Brett Paden said.

Fourth of July celebrations continue in Plantation, despite the rain

In Plantation, people lined the streets for the city's annual Fourth of July parade, joining communities across South Florida in commemorating the birth of the nation.

"America the Beautiful" played in the background as families waved flags and cheered.

"It's the birth of America and when they gained their independence from the U.K.," said Avery Pena, who came out to celebrate.

While rain chased some people away, others stuck around, determined to make the most of the day.

"We're just hiding out under these umbrellas, and when the sun comes out we'll head out on the beach," said Jim Vaughn, visiting with his family from Washington state.

The Vaughns reflected on the state of the country — and their hopes for what the holiday could represent.

"Empathy, friendship, community, love," said Anca Vaughn, when asked what she wishes for Americans this Fourth of July.

"I think our country is in a really difficult spot right now. I am proud to be an American," said Celia Vaughn. "But this country is a place where I would hope everyone can have an opportunity to be able to live the American dream."

Others echoed the hope that, at least for one day, unity could shine through.

"Today is about the birth of America. It's not about politics. Let's just leave all that aside and just celebrate that we're free," said resident Cheri Palmer.
