2 Minneapolis police officers injured while responding to domestic abuse call
Two Minneapolis officers were injured while responding to a domestic abuse call overnight Monday, the city's police department said.
The officers were hurt around 1:15 a.m. on the 900 block of 21st Avenue South, just south of Interstate 94 and a block north of East Franklin Avenue, police said. One officer suffered a cut to the head and the other to the hand, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
Upon arrival, officers allegedly saw the man and woman physically struggling over a child in the hallway and intervened. The man then retreated into his apartment and barricaded himself in the kitchen, using a pit bull as a shield, police say.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, speaking with the man for about 30 minutes and requesting a crisis negotiator, according to officials.
Police say the man armed himself with two knives when officers moved in to arrest him. As police tried to disarm and handcuff him, he injured the two officers.
The suspect also suffered injuries to his hand and an apparent self-inflicted stab wound to his chest, according to Minneapolis police.
Officials say a Taser was deployed during the incident, but it was not effective.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the suspect remains in the hospital. The two police officers were treated and released from the hospital shortly after the incident.
