One person killed, another injured in head-on crash in North Bethlehem Township
One person was killed and another was injured in an early-morning head-on crash in Washington County.
The crash happened just after 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday along Route 40 near the intersection with Valleyview Road in North Bethlehem Township, according to dispatchers.
One person has died in the crash and another is being flown by medical helicopter from the scene. The extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known, dispatchers said.
Crews were on Route 40 for hours, well into mid-morning.
Rt. 40 had been closed in both directions as first responders got to the scene, but the road was reopened as of noon Tuesday.
"I'm kind of like speechless," Hunter Humenik of Scenery Hill said.
State police told KDKA-TV that one of the vehicles going east came into the other lane at high speed.
"We heard the tires squealing and then the first impact," Humenik said. "And that's when the first explosion happened."
That wasn't the last one.
"There was minor explosions happening from the tires popping," Humenik said.
Both a pickup truck and a van ended up charred.
"I wanna say for about 30 to 35 minutes, both vehicles were in flames," Humenik said.
Another person was flown from the scene to the hospital via helicopter.
"He was pulled out of the vehicle by a passerby, a really lovely gentleman, Humenik said. "We brought waters and gauze and towels just to help out as much as we could."
These parts of Route 40 are winding stretches.
"I know that living on this road - I've seen so many people get past, or cars speeding," Humenik said. "... I think about my safety too as I'm pulling out of my driveway."
Pennsylvania State Police out of the Washington barracks will be leading the investigation into the deadly crash.
