A large tree branch killed a child and injured several people at a campsite in the Santa Monica Mountains Wednesday afternoon.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the branch fell on a campsite near the 1900 block of Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas.

The young child who died was attending summer camp at King Gillette Ranch, according to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

"My heart goes out to the family at this overwhelming and devastating loss," said Joseph T. Edmiston, Executive Officer of the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said paramedics took five people to the hospital. One of the patients was in critical condition and two more sustained minor injuries, according to firefighters.  At least one of them was airlifted to a hospital.

LA County Fire said two other people sustained injuries but declined to be driven to the hospital.

"My heart is with everyone impacted by the tragic situation at King Gillette Ranch. We are actively working to provide all possible support," County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath wrote in a post to X. "We hold everyone involved in our thoughts and pray for their safety."

MRCA said its staff and LA County deputies will investigate the death.
